Athlone student awarded €20,000 scholarship from Naughton Foundation

Marist College student Sean Kilgarriff has been awarded a €20,000 scholarship from the Naughton Foundation.

Sean has accepted a place at University College Dublin to study Mathematical Sciences. His former school, Marist College, was also presented with a prize of €1,000. Last year’s local winner Eoin Elliot, also from Marist College, picked up the much-coveted bursary.

Since its establishment in 2008, Naughton Foundation scholarships worth €1.2million have been presented to 110 remarkable young people in the fields of science, engineering, and technology in publically funded third level institutions in Ireland, north and south. 29 new scholars joined this illustrious and celebrated list for 2015.

There is one guaranteed scholarship of €20,000 for each participating county and five additional scholarships awarded each year. Each additional scholarship is worth €5,000 per annum for each year of a student’s three or four year undergraduate degree.

The awards ceremony took place in the Science Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin, where the university presidents and the founding patrons of The Naughton Foundation, Dr Martin Naughton and his wife Carmel, presented the winning students with their awards and cheques.

“We are absolutely delighted that our scholarship programme will now be nationwide with its expansion to Dublin and Cork,”  Dr Naughton said. “Each year we are amazed to see the calibre of the fine young people who apply to us. It gives us great pleasure to support their STEM studies and we hope it will be of great benefit to them and Ireland in years to come.”
