Better Energy Warmer Homes (BEWH ) is administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI ) and funds energy efficiency improvements in the home of the elderly and vulnerable, making their homes more comfortable, healthier, and more cost-effective to run.
The service involves the insulation of standard energy efficiency measures appropriate to the eligible household subject to a survey, budget allocation, and available capacity. The service is provided at no cost to the household and the measures currently available under the scheme are:
Low energy light bulbs
Cavity wall insulation
The scheme is available to homes which are owner occupied, non-local authority homes constructed before 2006 and in receipt of one of the following:
1. Fuel allowance
2. Job seekers allowance for over six months with a child under the age of seven
3. Family Income Supplement (FIS )
Landlords can avail of grants from BEWH if they have tenants in, or at risk of energy poverty. See www.seai.ie/BetterEnergyHomes for more information.
BEWH services are provided by a panel of SEAI-appointed non-profit community-based organisations (CBOs ) like us Home Comforts Athlone or a panel of SEAI appointed private contractors. The houses are appointed to a CBO or contractor depending on their geographic location.
Home Comforts Athlone will deliver the BEWH to the highest standard and will carry out an inspection after each house is completed. SEAI will also carry out an inspection on a sample of homes completed to ensure the standards are maintained.
