Council pass motion of no confidence in Irish Water

Westmeath County Council has unanimously passed a motion of no confidence in Irish Water, and are calling on the Government to abolish water charges.

Cllr Ken Glynn proposed the motion of no confidence, saying Irish Water had treated the public with disdain and that the council ought to send a message of support to the large numbers who had taken to the streets in recent protest marches.

Cllrs Michael O’Brien and Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran also tabled a separate motion calling for water charges to be abolished.

“People have accepted a lot of heavy lifting in the last six or seven years, and this is a step too far. The people have spoken, and the Irish Government should stand up and accept the will of the people,” said Cllr O’Brien.

There was cross-party support for both motions.
