Athlone A Cappella are still celebrating after winning gold at the annual Barbershop Harmony Convention which took place in Ennis recently.

This is a very significant win, following their very first appearance in the convention in Waterford last year where they won the brinze. The award now recognises the group as all-Ireland Ladies national chorus champions.

The chorus, which was founded in 2012, invcludes members from across the Midlands, and has won five major awards between national and regional festivals. The members of the chorus, from all walks of life, have developed a great love for their hobby and through their newly forged friendships and camaraderie have become a wonderfully happy group of ladies who work hard and create a truly magical sound.

Their winning formula included arrangements of ‘A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square’ and ‘I’m Gonna Live ‘Til I Die’. Their musical director, David Farmer, who has been singing and coaching four-part a cappella harmony for many years, was presented with the coveted gold medal and trophy.

The ‘Athlone Trophy’ has returned to the town again, having previously been won in 1999 by Sweet Auburn.

The chorus now have their sights set on their last competition for this year - Sligo Choral Festival on November 15. In addition, as part of their winter programme, they are about to embark on the recording of their first CD, all proceeds from which will go to the South Westmeath Hospice fund and will be launched officially on December 3 at their rehearsal venue, the Athlone Springs Hotel.

Athlone A Cappella are still seeking more new members, so if you would like to join this exciting musical group email [email protected] for details.
