Athlone patients cleared of suspected Ebola virus

The Ebola virus has been ruled out in the case of two Athlone residents who were brought to hospital on Monday night this week.

The patients were sent to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, amid rumours of a possible local case of Ebola. However, the HSE confirmed on Tuesday that there had not been any Ebola cases in Athlone, or indeed in Ireland.

It is understood that the patients were assessed on Monday night and the Ebola virus quickly ruled out.

While the HSE is unable to comment on individual cases in order to protect patient confidentiality, they confirmed that “there have been no cases of Ebola in Ireland”.
