Paul Bealin wants to stay on as Westmeath senior football manager

Westmeath suffered an All-Ireland round 1B qualifier loss to Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park last Saturday, but Bealin is hoping to see out his three-year term. “There are some fantastic players in Westmeath,” Bealin said.

“I’m there for three years unless they want to change me and that’s up to themselves but it is my intention to stay on.”

Bealin was satisfied with how Westmeath competed against Cavan despite a 12th straight competitive loss in 2014. “It is not a great statistic,” Bealin admitted. “As a player and as a manager, I have always been successful, so this is a hard pill to swallow.

“I feel for the players because they have given everything, but there is a context to the defeats. We always knew it was going to be difficult as a Division 1 team competing with the best in the country. When it came to Louth and Leinster, we should have won, but we didn’t perform that day. Saturday was better.

“So, while I’m disappointed, I still have a lot of hope for this team. My plan was always to be here for three years. That was why I chose Westmeath over two other counties, because I believe they have some excellent players.”
