Launch of Athlone Agri-Show and Food Festival 2014

The 12th Athlone Agri-Show and Food Festival will take place at the Showgrounds at Gaffey’s Farm, Moydrum on Sunday June 29.

The event was launched at the Bounty last Monday, when the schedule of events was announced by chairman Michael Flanagan.

This year sees the return of the Made in the Midlands Food Village and Craft Fair under the supervision of co-ordinator Martin Monagahan. The food village is a must visit for all foodies, where you will be able to witness food demonstrations, taste the products, and purchase the very best of Irish produce fresh from your doorstep.

There are 85 showing classes in the bovine section, and TG4 will have a TV crew at the event to film for a new agricultural programme, Feirm, to air later this year.

Other categories up for judging on the day include the equine section, ovine section, goats, poultry and pets, a Super Dog Show, and a cookery competition.

There will be a bring/ sell/ buy poultry fair, the world’s smallest cow Ella with her calf, as well as trade stands ranging from farm machinery, motor cars, garden equipment, fencing products, and home insulation systems to all kinds of new inventions.

A variety of amusements, fun and games are lined up for the children including a mini digger and duck pond, score the World Cup goal, Jump for Joy bouncy castles, quad bikes, slides, gladiator arena, face painting, and novelty balloons. Westmeath GAA All Star Dessie Dolan and friends will entertain all the football-crazy children from 2-4pm

Country and western fans have a treat in store with the fabulous travelling Country & Western Cowboy Disco Roadshow with open air dancing all day long. There will be a big screen in the beer garden for the GAA matches, and the Athlone Pipe Band will give a musical recital during the afternoon.

Admission is €10 for adults, and children go free. Parking is also free. The showground will be open at 8am for exhibitors and 10am for the general public.
