AIT graduate design show opens

The graduate design show at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT ) was officially opened last Friday evening May 23 by renowned illustrator David Rooney.

The show features the work of final year students on AIT’s degrees in design (communication ), visual communications and digital media. It is open to the public until Friday May 30.

The design show is running in parallel with another exhibition of students’ work in the shop window of Burgess in Athlone town centre.

Oliver Hegarty, head of the department of humanities, said: “The graduate show is a fantastic opportunity for the wider community to experience the artistic vision of our design students. There’s a startling breadth of media, perspectives and ideas to be experienced at this year’s show.

“We are also delighted that Burgess have kindly given us their shop windows to showcase the ‘Façade’ exhibition, the reaction to which has been very positive.”

David Rooney is an award-winning illustrator who has produced work for the BBC, The Irish Times, Hotpress, the Titanic Experience, King John’s Castle interpretative centre Limerick, Lindesfarne Gospels at Durham Cathedral, and the new Stonehenge Interpretation Centre.
