Little Theatre’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan opens Sunday

Athlone Little Theatre’s next production is the wonderful Martin McDonagh play, The Cripple of Inishmaan.

This is one of McDonagh’s best plays and it is described as a dark comedy. It is set in the island community of Inis Meain of the Aran Islands and tells the story of Billie Claven (the cripple ) who seeks a bit of excitement in his life and sees the perfect opportunity when a real Hollywood film crew are coming to a neighbouring island to make a film. Billie decides to try out for a role in the film and much to everyone’s surprise, he gets his chance.

This production is directed by Harry Smith and has a fantastic cast, with Dermot McManus in the role of Billie. Alongside Dermot are some vastly experienced actors such as Chrissie Killian, Pat Canty, Mick Dillon, and Anne Blackie. Edel Chadwick is playing Billie’s aunt and Geoff Boles makes a welcome return to the stage as the local doctor. The cast is completed by two new young actors, Molly Coyle and Breen Elliot.

No play can go on without a backstage crew and Harry has an excellent team working behind the scenes. The set construction was carried out by master of all trades Dermot McManus himself, when not busy rehearsing. Lighting and sound design is in the capable hands of Anthony Quinn and Martina Breen is once again lighting and sound operator. Stage management is under the watchful eyes of Sinead Reidy and Margaret Egan with Mary Connolly on continuity. Once again the highly talented Olivia Grogan has worked her magic as scenic artist.

This play is currently running on Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe in the role of Billie and also stars Pat Shortt. It has proven to be a massive hit so local audiences are in for a treat.

The play opens on Sunday April 20 and runs for eight nights to Sunday April 27 with curtain up at 8.30pm. Tickets can be booked by calling (090 ) 6474324.
