Opel is set to unveil the all new turbo diesel 1.6CDTi 110hp engine in the Astra at the Geneva Motor Show early next month. The ultra-efficient 1.6 CDTi 110 HP engine emits just 97g/km of CO2 and consumes an average of 3.7 litres diesel per 100 km or 76 mpg. And that qualifies the Astra for tax band A2 (€180 ) for annual road tax.
After debuting in the Zafira Tourer last year, this all-new diesel engine ensures that a powerful and clean drive is at the heart of the Opel model portfolio. Also available in the Astra hatchback, Saloon and Astra Sports Tourer models is the 1.6 CDTi 136hp variant with 320 Nm maximum torque. It boasts superb performance and minimum noise generation while consuming just 3.9 litres diesel per 100 km and emits 104 g/km of CO2 in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle test procedure ).
“This ultra-efficient 1.6 turbo diesel engine and the Astra are a perfect match, coupling performance with top refinement and high fuel efficiency. They prove that Opel cars not only impress with design, but also offer ultra-modern technologies, low running costs and a first-class driving experience,” said Dave Sheeran, managing director of Opel Ireland told the Advertiser.
Named the most reliable German compact car by the magazine auto motor und sport, Opel’s extremely efficient diesel engine already complies with the future Euro 6 emissions standards. This engine is the cleanest diesel engine Opel has ever built and has best-in-class noise and vibration levels thanks to its optimised component design, an especially efficient combustion process with multiple injection and additional acoustic measures.
The various performance levels of the newest generation all-aluminum turbo unit will successively replace engines with a 1.7-litre displacement, ushering in a new era in Opel’s diesel portfolio.
The output of the Astra 1.6 CDTi 136hp boasts a powerful 320 Nm maximum torque - 7 per cent more than the 130 HP 1.7-litre engine (previously 300 Nm ) and emits up to8 percent less than the 1.7-litre predecessor (previously 110 g/km ).
Performance is also superb: the turbo unit accelerates the Astra from zero to 100 km/h in just 10.3 seconds (Saloon: 10.1 seconds ); from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear it needs just 9.2 seconds (Saloon: 9.1 seconds, Sports Tourer: 9.9 seconds ). Top speed is 200 km/h and the Saloon even reaches 205 km/h.
Meanwhile the 110 HP variant features exemplary low-end torque of 300 Nm maximum torque which is 7 percent more than the 1.7-litre predecessor (previously 280 Nm ). With the new generation turbo diesel, the Astra hatchback, Saloon and Sports Tourer accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 12.0 seconds, and have a top speed is 186 km/h.
Improved transmission development
The new 1.6 CDTi engine in the Astra comes coupled with the further developed, improved six-speed manual transmission. This guarantees highest shifting comfort, as Opel invested over 50 million euros to optimise the five and six-speed gearboxes. A host of enhancements have been made to the transmission components and shifting mechanisms. Shifting requires minimal effort with the low-friction gearboxes, so that in the Astra 1.6 CDTi it is faster, more precise and above all silky smooth.
