Council urged to support Leinster Fleadh in Moate

The council is being urged to support Moate’s hosting of the Leinster Fleadh in July 2014.

Cllr John Dolan said the Fleadh coming to Moate was “a major honour for the town”, which would attract an estimated 8,000 people into the town, including 3,500 competitors alone.

“It will bring €150,000 to €200,000 into the local economy, and will overflow into Athlone with hotels, B&Bs etc,” said Cllr Dolan.

Cllr Tom Allen said the event, which takes place from July 11-13 next year, would bring great life to the town, which Moate would be “well able to handle”.

“I have been speaking to people in the traditional music world in the US, and they are looking forward to coming to Moate,” he added.

Cllr Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran wished to congratulate the committee on securing the festival for the town, while Cllr Frankie Keena said it should be a “no-brainer” for the council to support.
