Alleged dealer gets bail

A man charged with the possession of 3kg of cannabis, worth an estimated €18,000, was given bail at the District Court this week (September 25 ) on condition he lives at a particular address, and sign on once a week at the Garda station.

Detective Garda Niall Cogavin gave evidence of how he arrested John Ward (36 ), formerly of Retreat Park, but now living at Willow Green, Athlone, on Barrack Street on the morning of court.

He told how he formally charged Ward with possession, and possession with intent to supply the drug, which gardaí allegedly found in the attic of the Retreat Park address following a search.

“Judge, he made no reply to the charges,” said Det Garda Cogavin, before telling the court that the gardaí would require about another eight weeks to prepare the book of evidence in this case.

Counsel for Ward, Mr Tony McLynn, indicated he would be applying for bail for his client, and Det Garda Cogavin said the State would not oppose this, as long as Ward abided by a number conditions.

Ward was put on his own bond of €100, ordered to reside at the Willow Green address, and to sign on at Athlone Garda Station every Wednesday.

Judge Seamus Hughes remanded Ward on continuing bail until November 27.
