Free Alzheimer’s talk

Whelehans Pharmacy and Home Instead are hosting a free dementia and Alzheimer’s talk in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar on Monday September 16 at 8pm.

Dementia expert Joanne Flood will be talking about dementia care. This will be of particular interest to those caring for loved ones suffering from dementia.

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe various conditions which damage brain cells and lead to a loss of brain function over time. Dementia is a broad term, which describes a loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills, and normal emotional reactions. The symptoms of dementia develop gradually over a period of years.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s can include getting stuck for words or language difficulties; forgetting things like names, dates, places, and faces; Loss of interest in things once enjoyed; difficulty performing everyday tasks; disorientation in familiar surroundings; personality changes; misplacing items; and low mood.

Pharmacist Eamonn Brady from Whelehans Pharmacy in Mullingar explains that dementia has a life-changing physical, emotional, and mental impact on the affected person and their primary carer and family.
