Improving circulation

We have 100,000 miles of blood vessels in a complex network throughout our body. Pharmacist Eamonn Brady from Whelehans Pharmacy explains that symptoms of poor circulation can include cold hands, pins and needles in hands and feet, numbness, varicose veins, leg cramps, heavy feeling in the limbs, and swollen ankles

Tips to improve circulation

Drink plenty of water. At least eight glasses of water a day is required for adequate hydration.

Have a varied diet that includes vegetables, fruit, whole grain, fish, and poultry.

Limit sugar, alcohol, salt, and refined white flour products such as pasta and white bread.

Exercise improves circulation. To maintain or improve your level of fitness and improve circulation, a general guide is to exercise continuously at a steady pace for 20-30 minutes at least three times each week, but ideally about five times a week.

Smoking is a cause of many circulation problems so quitting smoking is important.

Some drugs narrow blood vessels so can be a trigger in some people; these can include beta-blockers, some anti-migraine drugs, and decongestants. Avoid if they cause a problem.

Caffeine can trigger symptoms in some people so should be avoided if it does.

Several prescription medications treat many of the underlying causes of blood vessel narrowing and hardening, such as high cholesterol level and high blood pressure. Speak to your GP or pharmacist for more details.
