Westmeath Tescos get ready for charity cycle

Staff members at Tesco Express Baylough, Athlone and Tesco Express Castlepollard will cycle the distance from Dublin to Cork on Thursday August 16 to raise funding for Aware, Tesco’s Charity of the Year.

A stationary bike will be in each store all day and staff will take turns cycling the equivalent of the 160 mile journey from Dublin to Cork. The teams are encouraging everyone from the local areas to come along and support the staff and even get involved in the cycle themselves. Customers can make a donation in the stores now or on the day of the cycle.

Rachel Murphy, store manager, Tesco Express Baylough, commented, “We are really excited about our upcoming cycle-thon event and we are asking everyone in the local community to come along, support us on the day and help us raise as much funding as possible for Aware”.

Aware is the national organisation providing information, support, and education around depression, a condition which affects more than 450,000 people in Ireland (one in 10 ) at any one time. Funds raised during the partnership in 2012 will go towards Beat the Blues, Aware’s free secondary schools programme which helps create a better understanding of issues amongst pupils, teachers, and parents. Depression affects many teenagers in Ireland and funds raised through the Tesco Charity of the Year partnership will enable Aware to deliver Beat the Blues to approximately 16,000 additional teenagers this year.
