Offaly pip Westmeath in high-scoring challenge

Offaly 3-14

Westmeath 4-10

It’s not often a team scores 4-10 and loses. Yet that is exactly what happened Pat Flanagan’s men when they took on Offaly in a challenge game played last Sunday evening to mark the official opening of St Rynagh’s new facilities in Cloughan.

Flanagan used the game as an opportunity to view some of his fringe players and the likes of John Heslin and the two Glennons were rested. Callum McCormack was impressive and finished with 2-1 to his name as did James Dolan who is enhancing his reputation as a goal-poacher.

One big plus was the inclusion of Denis Coroon who recently returned from the US and he will be a boost to both Westmeath and his club Mullingar Shamrocks in the coming months.

Offaly are warming up for their opening-round clash with Kildare on June 17 while Westmeath await the draw for the qualifiers.
