New year, new season for Athlone Film Club

The new year brings a new season for Athlone Film Club at the Dean Crowe Theatre. Audiences are in a for a treat as the club unveils an exciting line-up of films, from classic to contemporary embracing all genres in world cinema.

The new season commences on Tuesday January 17 with The Way, a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world.

The Way (2010 ), is directed by Emilio Estevez and stars his father Martin Sheen, who gives a commanding performance playing an irascible American doctor grieving for his son who has died suddenly walking El Camino de Santiago (The Way of St James - in Spain ).

When he decides to complete his son’s journey, meeting a number of interesting companions along The Way, his walk among the pilgrims path becomes a life-changing experience. Even if all the travelling is on foot lessons will be learned during the physical and metaphorical journey.

Sheen’s performance, the refreshing beauty of the northern Spanish countryside, and a sharp eye for the aggravating and revivifying company of strangers makes this film a walk worth pursuing and an opening film worth seeing.

The Film Club’s 2012 season will continue until April 3 as audiences will experience films of different genres from all over the world, including Denmark, France, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, and Ireland.

Films are screened generally every second Tuesday at 8pm in the Dean Crowe Theatre and Arts Centre, Athlone. Prior to each screening complimentary wine is provided in the theatre bar where people can socialise and discuss the forthcoming films.

The Film Club has also attracted members of varying nationalities and cultures and this is reflected in the multi-cultural themes of the films shown.
