Athlone national school Olympics in AIT today

All the primary schools in the Athlone region are participating in a sports day today (May 27 ) at the athletics track in the AIT.

It is anticipated that up to 20 schools will take part in this mini-Olympics, organised by local community policing gardaí.

“We’re definitely expecting between 15 or 20 [schools],” said Garda Fergal Greene, one of the organising officers, when asked earlier this week how many he expected to participate. Garda Greene told the Advertiser that invitations had gone out to all the prmary schools in the Athlone area and there were just a few who had yet to confirm.

Gates open at 9.30am and the first event will go under the gun at 10am. A full programme of events is anticipated. Though some sunshine is forecast, so is a number of showers, so Garda Greene suggests all participants bring a coat “just in case”.

The most successful school at the games will be awarded the Garda David Cryan Memorial Shield, a trophy presented in the memory of an Athlone-based garda who died on duty in a road accident a number of years ago.
