Banned car vandal gets appeal extension

A man hoping to appeal a one year driving ban imposed last month after he was convicted of causing criminal damage to a woman’s car, was successful in his application for an extension to this claim until February 1.

Oliver West (27 ), with addresses at Ashdale, Clonbrusk and the Cookhouse, Athlone, was given an eight month prison sentence, a two year driving ban, and a €300 fine on November 24, but had the jail term suspended after the judge heard he paid compensation for the €440 worth of damage caused.

Wanting to appeal the ban and fine, West had two weeks from November 24 in which to lodge this with the District Court; however the term limit fell on December 8, a date the Circuit Court was sitting in Athlone.

Because of this, Judge David Anderson deemed it proper to grant the extension, and West now has until February 1 to submit this.

West was convicted on account of his actions on April 24 on the Coosan Road when he took exception to how a woman was driving her car and so took at it with a baseball bat.
