Westmeath SFC round-up

Round three of the Shay Murtagh Westmeath senior football championship took place last weekend and a number of surprises were recorded. The most amazing stat after round three is that three of last year’s four semi-finalists have yet to record a win this year. Beaten finalists St Loman’s recorded their third straight defeat when going down 1-9 to 0-9 to Killucan.

Tyrrellspass are also pointless thanks to their latest defeat to The Downs on a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-10. Corralstown/Kinnegad complete the trio with the unenviable record of three straight defeats thanks to their 0-14 to 0-10 defeat at the hands of Tubberclare. Athlone made it three wins out of three with a hard-fought win over Maryland. Athlone needed three late points to seal matters on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-09.

Garrycastle, without a number of regulars, had four points to spare over St Malachy’s to remain unbeaten. Castledaly and Mullingar Shamrocks shared the spoils on a 2-7 scoreline. With two rounds still to be played in the group stages there is still plenty to play for. All will be a lot clearer after round four which is scheduled for the bank holiday weekend.
