Council welcomes new mayor

Independent councillor Shelia Buckley Byrne was officially welcomed as the new mayor of Athlone at this week’s meeting of Athlone Town Council.

Cllr Byrne has become the first female mayor of Athlone after being elected as a councillor during last year’s Local Election. Mayo native Fine Gael councillor Alan Shaw was elected deputy mayor.

Speaking after her election, Fianna Fail councillor Kieran Molloy said that Mayor Buckley Byrne would bring a difference and a new experience to the council. “This is the first time I’ve seen a lady in the chair, in all my 23 years in the council. And I certainly wish you well.”

Mayor Buckley Byrne thanked outgoing mayor Mark Cooney and her collagues. “This is an honour for me and a great opportunity to build on and help those in the local community,” she said.

“Everyone has something to give, and I wish to return the support given to me. It will be a busy year for the council,” she added.

Cllr Buckley Byrne’s election as mayor of Athlone along with Cllr Shaw’s election as deputy mayor sees the Fine Gael - Labour - Sinn Fein - Independent coalition hold power over Fianna Fail in the chamber.
