Psoriasis management event at Boots

Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases seen in dermatological practice in Ireland. It is estimated that psoriasis affects about 100,000 people in Ireland. Psoriasis is a skin disorder where there is an increase in the rate at which skin cells are produced and shed from the skin. Usually skin cells take one month to be replaced but in psoriasis it is faster. This results in pink thickened patches with silvery white scales.

Psoriasis commonly affects the scalp, elbows and knees but can appear anywhere on the body. The exact cause of psoriasis is still unknown. Genetic factors are thought to be involved, as one third of patients have relatives with the condition. It is thought that some people are more likely to develop psoriasis if other trigger factors are present, such as infection, stress, or sunburn. Dealing with the symptoms of psoriasis and controlling the condition is often an ongoing battle. In addition, severe psoriasis can have a significant impact on quality of life.

If you have psoriasis, attending a Qualitycare session could benefit you. A Qualitycare dermatology nurse advisor will attend Boots pharmacy in Golden Island shopping centre on May 12 between 9am and 1pm. The dermatology nurse will provide free expert advice on the management of your psoriasis and there will also be a range of recommended products available in the pharmacy for purchase.
