The Southern Gaels’ Under 13 team were presented with their Division Two Shield medals on Sunday last in the Gael Scoil.

This squad also won the Division Two League earlier in the year. A very promising group of young hurlers. Half of the group will move to play with the Under 15s squad next year, the remainder still eligible for the Under 13 age group. The team defeated Delvin in both finals.

County Minors

Congratulations to Ruairí Ó Duibhir who has been selected on the county minor hurling panel for 2023. Also, to Cathal Hardiman and Cillian Geary who are on the minor football panel. The club wishes the players chosen every success.

Club Calendar

The annual club calendar is being prepared for print and this eagerly awaited memento is a popular with all club members and supporters. Those interested in sponsoring any part of the calendar please contact Eoin Crosbie 086 0715773 or Martin Geary 087 2253350. There are various sponsorship packages available for different elements of the calendar. Individuals, families and companies are all welcome.

The new camogie jerseys arrived to the club this week, Southern Gaels entering teams at both adult and juvenile levels. Glenveagh Homes are sponsoring both sets of jerseys. The club wish to acknowledge their contribution to camogie and no doubt there will be many exciting days ahead for the girls as they become Westmeath’s newest camogie club. Thanks to Eoin Crosbie and Gearóid Ó Duibhir for their dedication to training the teams ahead of the coming year.

Team of the Month

Congratulations to the Under 19 team and management who won the Athlone Community Radio ‘Team of the Month’ award for November. The award recognised their winning of the Westmeath Under 19 Division Two title last month. It was the first time the club succeeded in winning a title transitioning between juvenile and adult levels for thirty-two years, the previous one being the Under 21 Division Two title in 1990.

Players of the Year

A meeting of players to plan for 2023 was held last weekend with mentors Martin Geary, Tom Murphy and Tony O’Keeffe. The club will enter a side in Division Two of the League and an Intermediate and Junior side in the Championship. There are currently about 40 adult players in the club but new members are always welcome. Training for the season will begin in early January.

Players of the Year awards were presented going back a number of years as they were missed out on due to Covid restrictions.
