Cllr Aengus O’Rourke has lauded the cohesive approach of those associated with Athlone Golf Club following the hosting of the prestigious All Ireland club competitions at the pristinely presented location this past weekend.

“Athlone Golf Club, its committee and members should be very proud of the way the club and course was prepared and presented for the visiting teams competing in the prestigious All-Ireland golf finals this week. It was an amazing honour for Athlone Golf Club to host these prestigious competitions.

“Hundreds of people from competing clubs from around the country were staying in Athlone and around the Midlands region from Thursday to Sunday last week and I was delighted to attend the opening ceremony and welcome the visiting teams to Athlone to wish them well in the competitions.

“During the week the feedback from the visiting players, family members, team management and supporters was excellent. They were impressed with the course, the hospitality and all that Athlone town had to offer.

“I want to pay particular tribute to the various committees within the club for bringing these All-Ireland finals to Athlone, they provided a great economic boost to the town and region at an important time. Huge credit is due to the Lady Captain, Frances McGettigan, Men’s Captain, Thomas O’Connor and Club President, Sam Delaney, all of whom ensured Athlone secured the hosting of these competitions in the first place and then made sure the weekend progressed professionally and smoothly. After the success of this past week, Athlone Golf Club must now be in the frame for many more big golfing competitions in the future,” Cllr O’Rourke asserted.
