Athlone Golf Club’s very successful ‘Get Into Golf’ programme for ladies will recommence on Thursday, April 28, at 7pm.

This exciting programme caters for women new to the game of golf and also those who may have played previously but have drifted away from the game.

The programme consists of weekly coaching lessons with resident club PGA professional Kevin Grealy and volunteer members with relevant participants learning basic skills and also experience fun activities. Golf clubs will be available if required.

This is a wonderful opportunity to try out a new sport in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Club house facilities will be available to all participants and a follow on programme will be offered on completion of the initial course.

For further information and to reserve your place on the course contact Imelda 087 3613961 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

Inter club upcoming matches

Now that summertime has officially arrived and the evenings are beginning to lengthen, inter club matches will soon be on the horizon.

In the men’s section, Athlone have a bye in the first round of the blue riband of Irish golf, the Senior Cup while the Barton Shield sees the club matched against a very strong Athenry team on April 28.

The ladies swing into action on May 5 in the Revive Active Fourball when the club hosts a first round home tie against neighbours Ballinasloe.

In the men’s All Ireland Fourball, Athlone Golf Club has also drawn a bye in the first round and will play Portumna on May 7 in the second round of the competition.

Lotto information night

Athlone Golf Club has had an excellent response from members voicing their support for the Lotto and affording due commitment to the initiative.

A successful Lotto means that much needed projects can be started and completed over an agreed period of time, namely junior golf, course improvements, ongoing house maintenance and improvements and improved IT structure and development.

Wednesday ladies and gents open days

The club’s Wednesday open day recommences now that ‘placing’ the ball has finished from April 1. The competition over 18 holes and can be used for handicap qualification purposes, is open to golfers who possess a WHS Golf Handicap.

Tee times can be booked through the BRS booking system or by ringing the Athlone Golf Pro Shop at 090 6492073. Visitors’ entry fee is €25 and members’ fee is €8. There is also a twos competition run by the club professional, entry fee for which is €2.

Course care

Please remember how important it is that all players continue to care for the course by repairing pitchmarks on every green.

Believe it or not

Golf professionals of the late 19th century had such bad reputations that when Fred Herd won the 1898 American Open, the USGA insisted that he put up security for the trophy, fearing he would pawn it for drinking money.
