Renowned photographer of the year to address Athlone Photography Club

The Athlone Photography Club committee will welcome PPAI Photographer of the Year, James Crombie, to the first public, in person, club event, in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, March 9, at 7.30pm.

The club is delighted to make this event open to the public after two years of living through a pandemic and meeting only via zoom meetings.

When the photography club secured James last year to speak to the club about his photography, they were confident James would be in line to win many awards with the PPAI.

The club watched closely the 44th annual Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI ) award ceremony in Dublin in recent times, and to their delight, saw James, who works with Inpho Sports Photography Ireland, named ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ and awarded third place in Daily Life and People, third place in Sports Feature and first place in Nature and the Environment categories.

James retained his photographer of the year title for the second year, with his superb portfolio, topped off with his recently world-famous image of the starling murmuration.

He was deservedly congratulated by Paul Sherwood, President of the PPAI, on the night of the awards.

Starting at 8pm on Wednesday, March 9, James will be presenting photographs he took during the 2021 Japanese Olympic Games, and possibly a few other gems from his outstanding portfolio. There will also be an open Q&A section where James will field questions about his career, equipment, experience and sports photography in general.

In order to maintain safe numbers at the event, club chairman, Liam Kidney, has requested people to contact the club’s secretaries, Ciara Kinnarney and Sébastien Rolland by email at [email protected] to reserve a seat with a cover charge of €5 for non-members to cover the night.

Registration will commence at 7.30pm with the talk starting at 8pm sharp.
