‘Recaptured and Draped’ project a wholly creative and positive experience

In partnership with Creative Ireland and Westmeath County Council with additional sponsorship from Viking Tours, visual artist Úna Cahill and Ciarán Mac Domhnaill have launched the community project entitled 'Recaptured and Draped'.

This inclusive project allows the public autonomy to be creative and affords participants a free, engaging and positive experience with emerging artists in the Midlands region.

Firstly, the foundation of the project us a four-part series of virtual workshops held on the June 12, June 26, July 17 and August 1.

To be involved, the participant can use any leftover paint and fabric they have at home. One will be able to download a completed pattern online (basic, intermediate and advanced ) or request a printed pattern by post. From this, painter and visual artist Úna Cahill will demonstrate how to paint and decorate the cut fabric. Participants will be encouraged to value the characteristics of found materials and their ability to transform sustainably.

The returned material will then be gathered and sewn into banners of ‘collective memories’. Finally, the collaborative artwork will be displayed in the public arena and create a meaningful engagement between the wider community and professional artists.

The project aims to fulfil five of nine Westmeath County Council Culture and Creativity Strategies.

1. To enhance opportunities for working with youths

2. To nurture and support artists networks and communities of practice

3. To enhance meaningful engagement between community and artists

4. To explore activities that engage communities in projects around themes of ‘collecting memories’

5. To develop links with local industries, creative practitioners and communities

There is no charge for the workshops and they are open to anyone resident in Ireland.
