Athlone IT Students Union welcomes confirmation of weekend polling day

The decision taken by An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, to hold the forthcoming General Election on a Saturday as opposed to a weekday has been positively received by Athlone Institute of Technology Students Union President, Áine Daly.

The Student Union President spoke to the Athlone Advertiser this week following formal confirmation of the February 8 polling day.

"With the General Election now formally confirmed for Saturday, February 8, it affords the opportunity to our students to return home to their own constituencies and cast their vote on election day.

"The students are affected by the lack of funding towards their education due to the continuous underspending in the Government’s budget. The students are informed and are keen to support the candidates who are putting the students issues in education as their main focus in their election manifestos.

"I would encourage our students and the wider community to use their vote on election day and support the candidates who value investment in higher education which is an investment in Irelands future," Áine emphasised.
