The fourth National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO ) table quiz featuring transition year students of secondary schools from Athlone and the Midlands region took place in the Nursing and Health Sciences building at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT ) recently.

Organized by the Midland branch of NISO, seven teams completed for the trophy and prizes, including Our Lady’s Bower Secondary school (OLB ), Athlone Community School (ACC ) and Moate Community School (MCS ), all of whom were competing for the John Flanagan cup.

Athlone Community College won the competition for the third year in succession. The winning team consisted of Sneha Chhipa, Suzie Gavin and Noa Moric. Moate Community School were runners up with a team of Hannah Doyle, Aoife Fox and Riona Lawless.

The winning team members each received a €100 each and a trophy for display in their school, while those team members who finished as runners up each received a €50 cheque and a trophy for their respective schools.

Thanks is afforded to the teachers who prepared the students in the three schools, namely Ethna Benson (OLB ), Nicola Burke (ACC ) and Margaret Mandel (MCS ). Also in attendance was Ms. Lillian O Neill (HSA representative on the NISO Executive National Committee and a past student of AIT ).

NISO stands for National Irish Safety Organisation, a voluntary organisation who have been promoting safety in the workplace for over fifty years. They run courses on safety nationally including ian annual All- Ireland company safety quiz (hosted in Athlone in 2015 ) and the All-Ireland safety awards ceremony (hosted in Athlone in 2016 ).

Three years previously, the NISO Midland branch initiated a new quiz to promote safety in the workplace among young persons namely the ‘TY safety table quiz’. It is loosely based on the annual company based NISO safety table quiz.

Many thanks to those who helped out in the organising and running of this quiz including, the Caretakers and Canteen staff of AIT and members of NISO Midlands and NISO HQ who were represented by NISO CEO, Mr. Ted O Keeffe and Mr. Harry Galvin, both of whom travelled from Dublin for the event.

Thanks also to the members of the Midland region who organised and ran the event on the night, including Ms. Chris McCormack, Mr. John Henson and Dr. Sean Reidy.
