Midlands ACEs Hub to host prominent screening in Athlone

The Midlands ACE’s Hub will screen the award winning documentary ‘Resilience’ in the Dean Crowe Theatre on Monday October, 7, at 10am.

With pre-screening registration to commence at 9.30am, this is a film which is helping the world awaken to the impact of childhood trauma.

This event is suitable for both parents and anyone working with or volunteering with children, young people and families in areas such as education, justice, public and mental health, sport, family support and schools.

After a hugely successful tour in the UK and more recent screenings across Ireland both North and South, feedback to this documentary has been extremely positive.

What is ACEs?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs ) is the term used to describe all types of abuse, neglect, and other potentially traumatic experiences that occur to people under the age of 18.

Adverse Childhood Experiences have been linked to certain outcomes such as risky health behaviours, chronic health conditions, low life potential and early death

As the number of ACEs increases, so does the risk for these outcomes.

The Midlands ACE’s Hub notes that it is important to point out that the presence of ACEs does not mean that a child will experience poor outcomes.

However, children’s positive experiences or protective factors can prevent children from experiencing adversity and can protect against many of the negative health and life outcomes, even after adversity has occurred.

The findings of the Adverse Childhood Effects study, published in 1998, have revealed the most important public health findings of a generation. Scientists now realise that extreme childhood trauma is one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression.

The Midlands ACE’s Hub are trying to connect with as many people who work with children and young people to spread the awareness of ACE’s and attempting to address the conditions that put children and families at risk of ACEs so that ultimately, such a scenario can be prevented.

A screening to take place in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Monday, October 14, at 10.30am and is jointly hosted by the Midlands ACEs Hub and Tusla’s Prevention Partnership and Family Support programme.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion of speakers, giving all attendees a chance to explore the insights generated by the film.

Guest speakers for this screening include, Senator Lynne Ruane, Gary Cunningham Author of ‘Joys of Joy’, Effion Williams Service Director for Commissioning TUSLA, Marian Tierney Child Health Programme Development Officer, HSE Primary Care

After the panel discussion, delegates will be invited to refreshments to promote further discussion and an opportunity to network.

The Midland ACEs Hub looks forward to welcoming all to this event. Tickets are available via eventbrite.
