Local Independent Councillor, Michael O’Brien, has called on Athlone Municipal District to seek funding for the provision of a walkway along the lower road from Ballykeeran to Glasson.
Cllr O’Brien made his calls when he tabled a motion at the recent meeting of Athlone Municipal District.
“I’ve received many representations from residents in Ballykeeran looking for a safe walkway to be provided in the area. At the moment there is no walking area in the locality. It is a residential and key amenity and tourist area along the shores of the beautiful Lough Ree and there should be a walking area here,” Cllr. O’Brien noted.
The Independent Councillor remarked that the provision of a walkway would be of immense benefit to the area.
“The provision of a walkway would enhance the area greatly, it would provide a safe place to walk for the local community and strengthen the area from a tourism perspective,” Cllr. O’Brien added.
Receiving strong support from the Council for his motion, the official response noted that the funding request can be considered when relevant opportunities for such amenities are launched this year.
