Westmeath politician seeks assurances on Road Traffic Act

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, Robert Troy TD, has called on the Government to consolidate the Road Traffic Act and to ensure that no further disproportionate amendments are tabled by Minister Ross.

Deputy Troy explained that a lot of time had been spent debating road traffic legislation and the public need clarity on all matters in this regard.

“The most challenged piece of legislation on the Irish Statue Books is the Road Traffic Act. Earlier this year, over thirty hours were spent debating road traffic legislation following lengthy filibusters. The Minister himself must accept some of the blame for this as he fails to prioritise legislation and instead pursues his latest hobbyhorse.

“The Programme for Government states, and indeed Minister Ross agrees, that the Act should be consolidated. Yet we know nothing at all has been done in this regard and Minister Ross continues to confuse and complicate the Act with disproportionate proposals.

“Despite agreeing with me that it was an urgent matter, The Taoiseach said that very little progress was made to date and that there is no projected date for the consolidated Road Traffic Act.

“Instead of dealing with the legislation and challenges on a piecemeal basis the Government needs to commit itself to working meaningfully on a consolidated Act,” Deputy Troy concluded.
