Hope begins to spring across county

The county could be in line for a number of seasonally appropriate projects in the coming days as some springtime optimism seems to be sprinkled over the planning process in recent weeks.

In Delvin, an application has been made by Ballynegall Feeds to build a pig rearing unit with a capacity for 744 sows.

In an other-side-of-the-plate related application, the master of the Mullingar Angus thoroughbred herd, Joe Brady from the shores of Lough Owel, has applied to create an allotment centre at his farm in Tullaghan to allow the public grow their own vegetables. A small access road and car park is included in this.

In the town of Mullingar, Ms Vladislava Boravska's small shop on Parnell Terrace, Patrick Street is seeking permission for an extension into the residental area to the back of her small shop on Parnell Terrace Patrick Street.

Ceoltas Ceoltoiri Eireann is hoping to build a glazed extension at the Mullingar Arts Centre on the first floor, over the toilet block.

Further along in the planning process, Tony Allen amd Seamus Cullinane in Moate are expecting to hear this week whether they have been successful in their application to convert the old post office on Main Street into 880 sqm of shop and 770 sqm of offices in a two storey development.

An Taisce members can breathe easy. Its listed facade is to be preserved.

In Athlone, developers Maureen Flynn, John Parke and Chris Moran are also to find out this week whether their plans to close Rayners pub on Sean Costello Street and convert it into a shop and offices has been successful.

This plan will see an extension of the cafe bar and restaurant on the premises down along the adjacent Paynes Lane.

On the other side of town, Eric Dilworth and Imelda Geraghty have an equally short wait to hear whether they have got green-lighted with their plans to convert a shop unit into a restaurant at the Left Bank Mall on Pearse Street.

However, the only actual granting of note was to Smyths in Killucan for a 200 sqm off-licence, as well as a few minor adjustments to the interior of their Gala store in the village.
