Construction is to begin on two major health projects for Tuam - a new community nursing unit and a mental health day facility and disability unit - totalling more than €30 million.
The HSE has issued the letter of intent to the successful contractors for the works. The nursing unit is a replacement for the Árus Mhuire facility which has been deemed to be no longer fit for purpose. It represents an investment of €17.5 million and will deliver a modern 50 bed nursing home including facilities for high dependence patients.
'Final piece in the jigsaw'
The Old Grove building is to be converted into a modern mental health day facility and early intervention disability services facility. The project will cost €13 million. The news has been welcomed by Galway East TD, Seán Canney.
“This is the final piece in the jigsaw in providing a modern health campus in Tuam, which includes the ambulance base and the primary care centre. I have worked to bring these latest projects to fruition, and acknowledge the work of the HSE locally, and the support of Simon Harris and Finian McGrath former Ministers for Health and Disabilities in the last Government.”
