Ryanair has launched two new routes to the sun drenched and hugely popular Canary Islands, with another service to the popular islands due to come on stream in April. The airline now offers flights to Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and will add Lanzarote to its ex Knock destinations on April 6. All three routes will operate on a year-round basis.

The decision late last evening in the High Court to approve a plan for the survival of Aer Arann is one that is to be welcomed warmly in the west and indeed in all of the remote locations that it serves along the western seaboard of this country.

There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for Aer Arann as UK logistics group Stobart announced it will be investing €2.5 million for the airline to operate flights to London Southend Airport.

The news that came out of the High Court yesterday afternoon that there is a reasonable chance of Aer Arann surviving is one that should be welcomed most especially here in the west. Our local airport is dependent on Aer Arann for giving us the type of connectivity to the major UK and Irish cities that a major city like Galway needs.

Aer Arann has a “reasonable prospect of survival” and could return to profitability by next year, the High Court was told at a hearing held yesterday (Wednesday) to determine the airline’s examinership status.

Following the announcement last week in the High Court that Michael McAteer of Grant Thornton has been appointed as interim examiner to Comhfhorbairt (Gaillimh) trading as Aer Arann, the airline has assured the public that all scheduled services will continue to operate as normal.
