A book of condolences in commemoration of the death of the Polish president, his wife, and 95 people in a tragic plane crash last weekend, has been opened in Westport Town Council.

A number of events taking place around Westport are currently being finalised for the National Famine Commemoration which will take place on May 16 in Murrisk.

Following notification of a housing capital allocation to be received by Mayo County Council, the acting town manager of Westport Town Council Martin Keating said that the allocation will allow the Kilmeena housing scheme in the Westport area to be completed as well as progressing with rural housing applications in 2010.

Following the Polish air crash tragedy, which resulted in the death of the Polish president, his wife and 95 other people, the Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Myles Staunton has asked the town clerk to set up a book of condolences at the offices of Westport Town Council. The Book of Condolences will be forwarded to the Polish Embassy.

The next Westport Civic Trust illustrated talk, which will be the last of this season, will take place on Friday April 16 at 8pm in the Atlantic Coast Hotel.

The Days Duathlon race was a big success for Castlebar, good field, lovely weather, and a tough course were all the ingredients that served up an event that many will want to participate in in the years to come. As expected the run up to the Glenisland booster station proved to be decisive as hot favourite Rory Geraghty from Galway tri club turned on the gas to open a big lead by the top of the 1,450 feet climb, his time of 22min 24sec for the 4k up hill run is an unbelievable bench mark to try to beat. Geraghty set all the fastest splits along the way but it was young Constaine Doherty from Westport who showed the real talent, at only 14 years of age he pushed Dublin’s experienced tri-athlete Neil Bolger all the way to the line and just missed out on second place, his result of third overall was a real surprise and he looks like a real champion for the future.

The next film screened at the Westport Film Club will be Sin Nombre on Wednesday April 7 at 8.45pm.

Three Westport restaurants and one Ballina gastro pub have been honoured at the Irish Restaurant Awards 2010.

To celebrate this feat a victory dinner dance is to take place on Saturday March 27 in the superbly appointed Knockranny House Hotel in Westport.
