Tight battle expected in Sunday showdown

After 13 games in the Welcome Inn Hotel Premier A Division, they cannot be separated on points, but come Sunday either Conn Rangers or Swinford FC will be heading home with a piece of silverware for the winter when they meet in the Westaro Cup final. Both sides are competing in one of the tightest league races seen in recent years as they battle for the title promotion to the Elverys Sports Super League with Westport United B (who even if they win the league cannot get promoted) and Ballyglass. The current league table has Westport out in front with 29 points, the three other sides locked together on 28 points with five games to go in the league.

Fahy kick off fight for survival

By the time this paper hits the shelf on Friday morning, Westport United will have had the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Elverys Sports Super League to 17 points after they faced Moy Villa in Attymass last night. The day that they are confirmed as champions looks to be edging ever closer. Last weekend in the Super League Fahy Rovers picked up their second win in the league with a surprise 2-1 win over Ballina Town in Moneen. That win by the side who are bottom in the table all but killed off any slim chance that Ballina had of catching Westport United in the top. Fahy left it late, when Tommy Gill struck twice in the final few minutes of the game, the first four minutes from time and the second three minutes into injury time.

Premier A title still up for grabs

It is still all to play for in the Welcome Inn Hotel Premier A title race this weekend. With only two rounds to go in the league, Conn Rangers, Ballyheane, are the favourites to finish in the top two, with both sides meeting this Sunday. Snugboro United’s challenge took a major dent in the last round of games when they were beaten 3-2 by Clew Bay United, leaving them trailing first place Conn Rangers by four points and second placed Ballyheane by three points. If Ballyheane see off Conn Rangers in Quigley Park this Sunday, it will leave the door open for their near neighbours in Snugboro to overhaul Conn Rangers on the last day of the season when they travel to Mount Falcon to take on the north Mayo side. First thing for the Conway Park side is a game at home against a bottom of the table Swinford on Sunday at 2.30pm.
