Blue is the colour

image preview

The colour blue is, in my opinion, a very classy colour adding a sharpness to any garden setting. It conjures up images on the one hand of Mediterranean holidays, azure skies and seas, while on the other hand reflects the ‘moody blues’. It is in effect a very versatile colour. Mix with it minor shades of blue such as lavenders and mauves and you have a very calming setting, which is of course something that we all strive for in our ‘fast lane’ lives.

Goals give Ireland slender advantage

image preview

So at 'half-time' in the Toyota International Rules series, Ireland hold a slender one-point advantage over Australia. Despite the host's stirring late fight back, there was a school of thought that Ireland may have missed a trick by not playing more positively with an extra-man advantage in the closing minutes.

Anne of Coole Park

I brought her a bag of apples on our first ‘date’. Not very romantic, I hear you say. True. And not very generous. Also true (Tesco special offer – one pound for a ‘family bag’). I was merely continuing a tradition. She was Anne Gregory and during her childhood at Coole Park, “every year John Quinn, Grandma’s great friend in New York, used to send a great case of apples to us.” So it is recorded in Anne’s beautiful book Me and Nu, Childhood at Coole. ‘Nu’ was Anne’s sister, Catherine. If you haven’t read Me and Nu, treat yourself to a copy for the New Year. It is still in print after nearly 40 years.

Cooking the Wright way

The aroma of freshly baked scones leads many ‘foodies’ down the cobbled Kirwan’s Lane to Kate Wright’s Cobblestone Café. Still others wander down the mediaeval lane to give Kate’s most faithful café companion a friendly pat on the head. Lilly – Kate’s dog, has become synonymous over the past 10 years with Cobblestone, and even features on the café’s website, www.galwaycookeryclasses.com.

Piano man - the return of Conway Savage

image preview

Conway Savage makes everything sound easy. His forthcoming tour of Ireland came about because he “met some nice people who liked my stuff”; he records at home and distributes on his own label because it’s cheap and he likes “that home sound”; and there is no conflict between his solo work and that of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, with whom he has played piano for the past 15 years - “My stuff’s my stuff and then I’m called in to work with the Bad Seeds.”

Sport, shopping and fine dining, Manchester has it all

The Mancunian football rivalries may be bitter, but what unites football fans throughout Manchester is their passion. It’s a sport that defines the city, and when match day comes, you can sense the excitement everywhere. And while sport is synonymous with Manchester, its shopping is equally impressive. That’s what I learned on a whirlwind media trip to Manchester where we marvelled at the sights and sounds of Old Trafford, the Northern District and two of Manchester’s top eateries. If you and your partner are thinking of booking a weekend away, Manchester won’t disappoint.

For the pride of the parish

There are a few places in Mayo that no club like going to because they know it’s going to be very hard to come out of there with anything — McGovern Park in Newport is one of them.
