Lap of the Mask a big success

A large group of leisure cyclists took on the 64k lap around Lough Mask last Saturday. This was the fifth annual running of Western Lakes Cycling Club’s Lap of the Mask, which raised funds for the Cystic Fibrosis West Building Fund.

Coroner records verdict of accidental death in Lough Mask death

Mr John O’Dwyer, Coroner for south Mayo, recorded a verdict of accidental death this week in the tragic case of a Romanian man who died last weekend after a wave capsized a fishing boat he was in. Mircea Ungar, (53), a married man from Sibiu, Romania, was in Ireland for a fishing trip with five friends and was staying in Tourmakeady. The inquest heard that the deceased died due to drowning after water got into his lungs through a tracheotomy tube in his throat.

Lap of the Mask leisure cycle

As the leisure cycle season gets under way in earnest in the month of May, Western Lakes Cycling Club in Ballinrobe is getting ready for the Lap of the Mask, its first big leisure cycling event of the summer. A large crowd is expected to attend this year’s event, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday). Last year’s Lap of the Mask saw a 150 strong crowd complete the 64km circuit around the lake.

The action gets underway on Sunday for the winners of both the Mayo Junior and Intermediate championships, when both Tourmakeady and Parke face Galway opposition. The men from the Gaeltacht will have Mayo advantage when they host St James from Galway city on Sunday, in McHale Park. The Galway champions overcame An Spidéal in the Galway final by a single point a fortnight ago, winning out on a score of 0-9 to 0-8. Midfielder Paul Conroy was the top scorer for the St James men in the final kicking four points of their nine point total.
