Chief executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, responded to a query from Sinn Féin councillor Rose Conway-Walsh about claims made of planning irregularities in an unnamed county in the Sunday Independent last week. Mr Hynes responded to the councillors query saying: “I am aware of the coverage in a national newspaper at the weekend. You will be aware that no county was named in that and it appears that it might refer to Mayo, but as of now, we have had no communication from any agency or authority. If we are communicated with, as always we will co-operate fully with any investigation that takes place to its conclusion.” He concluded by saying that he couldn’t comment any further.

Members of the Mayo public may soon be able to judge for themselves how well their councillors are representing them in the council chamber, by watching them at work, live on the internet.

The second meeting of the new Castlebar Municipal District saw the row over the potential construction of a 50-metre swimming pool for the town as opposed to a 25-metre pool, as had been approved by the former Castlebar Town Council, raise its head from the depths again.

The issue of a permanent home for the new Castlebar Municipal District was raised again at the July meeting of the municipal district. Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne said he felt the municipal district should have a proper chamber to hold its meetings in and receive people in, and that the current meeting venue in the Áras was not suitable especially if members of the public wanted to attend.

Mulranny based Independent Cllr Michael Holmes was elected the first cathaoirleach of one of the new Municipal Districts, when he won a vote to take the chair of the of the area by four votes to two, with one member abstaining from the vote.

A proposal to have all 400kv power lines undergrounded included in the new Mayo County Council development plan fell at a vote (12-10, with nine councillors absent for the vote ) at this week’s special meeting of the council to approve the new county development plan.

An unusual motion appeared in this week’s Athlone Town Council agenda when sitting Fine Gael councillor and All Ireland Drama Festival organiser Alan Shaw motioned that candidates in the upcoming May 23 local elections would have regard for the RTÉ drama festival by refraining, where possible, from erecting posters in the town centre area until after May 9 when the festival ends.

The urban/rural and north/south divides in Westmeath need to be tackled when the local government reforms come into effect in June.
