Most politicians will have breathed a sigh of relief last week when the unappetising prospect of a Christmas general election was narrowly averted. Yet, all know it is only delaying the inevitable, and all sides agree the contest will take place within the next four or five months, quite possibly as soon as February.

We are truly fully back when the old problems continue to assert themselves. Brexit has assumed a central role again on the political stage, with the usual chaos and parliamentary pantomime evident at Westminster. And yet no one has come up with an alternative to Theresa May’s Brexit plan. There will be a vote next week in the UK parliament, and as the Prime Minister herself has said, who knows what will happen next? It’s really unsettling all round and very difficult for government departments, agencies and so on to make any plans as they are facing into the unknown.

I am going to begin with a really, good, lively story. I hope many of you watched the televised Munster Senior Hurling Championship semi-final on Sunday between Kilkenny and Waterford. I am not at all a hurling fan. I follow all football whether GAA, soccer, or rugby, but I actually never sat down to watch a hurling match. But I started watching this one and I was riveted by it.
