Castlebar will officially become a University town on April 1, 2022, following the announcement this week of the new name for the technological university in the region and its expected starting date, by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD.

There has been a warm welcome to the announcement of the designation of Technological University for the West and North West, which will take in GMIT (including its campus in Castlebar), IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT.
