Mulherin appointed to EU Committee of Regions

Ballina Fine Gael councillor Michelle Mulherin is to become a full member of the Committee of Regions. This is a committee of the European Union which has to be consulted by the European Commission and the EU Council in regard to matters of local and regional authorities.

Bannon walk-out in protest at flood failure

Local Fine Gael TD James Bannon walked out of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Heritage & Local Government on Tuesday, in protest at the Government’s failure to set up a river Shannon authority to ensure that flooding will not devastate housing, farming, business, and tourism in the Midlands again.

FG recognise Paddy Cannon for life-long service to the party

The Fine Gael party recently recognised the life-long service of Paddy Cannon, Westport Road, Castlebar, to the Fine Gael organisation. Mr Cannon was presented with a commemorative Michael Collins photograph to mark the occasion at the recent annual general meeting of the Henry Kenny, Castlebar, Fine Gael Branch. At the meeting, Mr Cannon was also elected to the position of honorary president for the local Fine Gael branch.

An allocation of €2,000 has been announced for Midfield Development Association under the Clár Bilingual Signage Scheme. The scheme provides funding towards the erection of private, community, and townland bilingual signs.

Urgently needed roads funding a matter of life and death – O’Mahony

Mayo Fine Gael TD John O'Mahony has called on the Transport Minister Noel Dempsey and Environment Minister John Gormley to reverse their decision not to provide emergency funding to repair roads damaged by the recent bad weather. The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Mary Hanafin TD has urged voluntary organisations which provide family counselling services to apply now to the Family Support Agency for funding under their 2010 scheme of grants.

Kenny criticises gov over Mayo’s unemployment figures

Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny TD has criticised the Fianna Fáil/Green Government for what he calls “their reckless approach to job security and creation” as Mayo’s unemployment figures went through the roof over the past two years. The figures obtained from the Minister for Social and Family Affairs for January 2007 shows 4,760 people signing on in the county. This is compared to 12,114 in September 2009 and demonstrates the seriousness facing a substantial part of Mayo’s population.

€36,000 funding for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services

Funding of €36,000 for Castlebar Voluntary Social Services based at Castle Street car park has been welcomed by the Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD.  The funding has been issued by the Department of Health and Children as part of their 2009 allocation from National Lottery funds. The funding has been issued to aid in refurbishment work at the social services centre which provides numerous important services around the wider Castlebar area.
