Galway county champions Gort tried hard, but ultimately fell short in the All-Ireland semi-final against an experienced Ballyhale Shamrocks outfit last weekend in O’Connor Park in Tullamore.

The Gort hurlers and their loyal band of supporters will head to Thurles on Saturday knowing the vast majority of people in the county and country expect them to meet their Waterloo against Kilkenny champions Ballyhale Shamrocks.

Generally counties that have been knocked out at quarter final stages will have their championships run off early in the month, while counties like our own who have progressed that bit further in the championship tend to have their big day in late October.

Kilkenny put on a good display when defeating Waterford fairly comprehensively by 0-26 to 3-9 in an entertaining challenge game in Tallow on Sunday night in front of an attendance of over 2,000 supporters. Henry Shefflin was a welcome return to the team.

There was so much drama in last Sunday’s final league action that the GAA hierarchy could be forgiven for doing a U-turn on the reinstatement of the semi-finals that was passed in congress last Saturday.
