Culture Night kicks off tomorrow night, Friday September 22.

Once again, the entire city will be positively electric with excitement, with over fifty very special and unique cultural events happening across multiple venues for Culture Night on Friday September 22. Experience entire street transformations, innovative theatre, candlelit concerts and visual arts. Learn new skills including sign language, juggling, origami, boatbuilding and even try your hand at the harmonica! Gain a better understanding of Galway’s growing international communities including Spanish, African and nomadic cultures. Events run all day and into the night in our ‘Culture Night Late’ programme. All activities are available completely free of charge supported by the Arts Council and Galway City Arts Office.

One of the earliest associations of Eyre Square with the horse was the jousting competitions that went on there in the middle ages. There were also horse fairs held in the Square where one could buy and sell horses, these were usually held outside the railings and on the streets. Before motorised machinery was invented, the horse provided people with their main type of transport: the work horse was an invaluable part of the farm used to pull the plough or haul the farmer and his cartload of produce into town. Horse racing was always a popular sport and the first Galway Horse Show was held in the Square in 1892.

For many people, the Christmas market takes place in Eyre Square and involves a big wheel, hurdy-gurdies and German beer tents. For others, it is part of a Galway tradition that goes back some 800 years under the shadow of the old grey St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church. This was the fruit and vegetable market which expanded greatly at this time of the year with the big influx of turkeys and geese for sale.

Gaillimh le Gaeilge has announced the 16 nominees who have been selected as this year’s finalists for Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh 2021. Celebrating the Gradam’s 19th anniversary, this year’s Gearrliosta reflects the diverse range of businesses and organisations celebrating an Ghaeilge and making their mark on bilingual Galway and across the country.

Gaillimh le Gaeilge has announced this year’s finalists for Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh. At a meeting which was held over Zoom, there was much discussion between the moltóirí as to who would be selected to go through to the next stage of the Gradam and move one step closer to becoming The New Tribe of Galway.

The popular Annual Christmas Fayre will take place on Saturday November 24 starting at 10am in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church (beside the Saturday market).

Galway Choral Association is 20 years young in 2018, and to mark the occasion they are hosting a gala concert this weekend.

A rare musical treat Polar Voices – From the Arctic to the Atlantic will be held in St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Wednesday next June 22 at 8pm.
