Ballybrit Racecourse will play host to two days of National Hunt racing this Bank Holiday weekend as the October Galway Races get under way on Sunday. The Galway Advertiser will be giving away some pairs of tickets to the meeting in conjunction with the Galway Race Committee and Renvyle House Hotel who are sponsoring a race at Ballybrit on Sunday.

Kilkenny’s Eddie Moloney showed his class to take the spoils at the Allianz Leinster indoor horse championship at the Kill International Equestrian Centre in Co Kildare last weekend.

World Championship success for Athlone Taekwon-do trio

Members of Mary Mannion’s Athlone Taekwon-do Academy represented Ireland in the International Taekwon-do Federation World Championships in South Korea recently. Mannion herself competed as did her students, Leon Brydone and Dylan Lacey. As well as competing in the individual categories, Dylan represented Ireland on the junior teams. Brydone featured on the men’s senior team. The current European champion sacrificed the individual sparring to save himself for the team due to a recovering injury.

All change ahead of next season

As was reported last week, it is all change in the Mayo League next season thanks to the restructuring of the five divisions into six divisions of eight teams each. The final shake up of the divisions was sorted out last weekend with play off games in the old Premier Division and Division One. In the Premier Division play off Clew Bay United saw off Bangor Hibs 4-1 in Manulla, while in the Division One play off Kiltimagh/Knock United beat Castlebar Celtic B 2-1 in Swinford.

Run in Ballina

The Irish Cancer Society is appealing to the people of Mayo to take part in its local Terry Fox Run this Sunday in aid of cancer research. The run will start from Belleek Track, Ballina, (Sunday October 10) at 2pm.

Kilkenny athlete for IPC World Championships

A Kilkenny Paralympic athlete has been named on the nine-person Irish team for the 2011 IPC World Athletics Championships, due to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand next January.
