I will never forget Saoirse’s face of bravery

image preview

In the winter of 2020, the world was a dark place. Hope was in short supply in a country and world laid low by a common cause. Our mood not helped by the nightly roll call of the departed; everything we knew as life had come to a standstill in a world in which even the most devastating news stayed within homes, dwarfed by the enormity of the worldwide virus.

Every community needs a Martin Horgan

image preview

As was the norm, the last time I spoke with Martin Horgan, one of us was either coming or going to a football pitch. Trudging off with a bag of balls, shoving singlets into a box, making some arrangement for the pushing of some project or others, the complexion of sporting satisfaction evident in our visage. Perhaps because it was always in places like that that we encountered each other, my memories are so precious and so sad. Pitches were a playground in our youth, and in our more mature years, they still represent a leap from the reality of life. Perhaps that is why I love them so much. That reality hit home this week when Martin passed away, his death sending shockwaves throughout the sporting community in Galway and his wide circle of family and friends.

Cherishing those precious family moments as local election date looms on the horizon

Here we were last week, extolling the marvellous spring weather, birds singing, sun shining, everyone in good humour, and this week, as I compile this column, snow is actually falling outside. Now, of course it’s dissolving into rain as it hits the ground, but imagine, such changes in temperature. Last week one day it was 17.5 degrees when I was out in the car, and today, in the same car going to the same place, it is 4.5 degrees. If it’s variety you want in your weather, we’ve got it in here in Ireland in spades. I expect that this harsh weather will not last for long, at least I hope it won’t. But what a contrast! The old wives tale says ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May be out’, and it seems those wise saws were right.
