Investigation into Riverside fire to get under way as businesses bounce back

Gardaí were yesterday awaiting confirmation that the buildings destroyed in a fire at Riverside Commercial Estate on Saturday night are safe enough to allow a technical examination to get under way. Four premises were gutted in the blaze, which was the biggest fire in Galway since the Farah factory fire of 1986.

Collins takes on European champ in world title fight

Galway Black Dragon kickboxer Nicola Collins has her sights set on becoming the West of Ireland’s first female World kickboxing champion when she takes on the current European champion from England this Saturday in Leisureland, Salthill.

• Galway County badminton team enjoyed a famous win in the All Ireland inter-county finals at NUIG sports centre. Having advanced from the qualifying weekend, Galway faced Roscommon in what proved a tight All-Ireland semi final. Early nerves and a couple of tight set losses saw the team trail Roscommon 3-2 in the best of nine, but a great win in the first ladies’ doubles saw Galway draw 3-3. Galway won two of the three mixed games to squeeze through to the All Ireland final 5-3. Up against Meath, Galway got off to a flying start, winning both singles to take a 2-0 lead. Second ladies and second men soon followed to leave Galway in a strong 4-0 lead. It was left to Galway's first doubles pairing of Ross Creaven and Colm Franks to clinch the deciding match to give Galway an unbeatable 5-0 lead and the Class 4 All-Ireland title. Gold for Galway at World Champs in Italy

Two gold, five silver, and two bronze medals was the medal haul achieved by Pete Foley and his team of Black Dragon Fighters who competed in the World Martial Arts Games in Italy at the weekend.

European titles on the line at kickboxing tournament
