A presentation on the Housing Capital Programme for Mayo County Council in the West Mayo region this week turned into a debate on the future of rural Ireland. Comments from the councillors followed a presentation by head of housing for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson. Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor Paul MacNamara said: "What about rural Ireland? If we build all these houses in urban areas are we going to close the door on rural Ireland? Of the 220 houses, there is nothing here for rural Ireland. The sites have to be acquired."

Homes already identified as having pyrite issues should be put top of redress list

The 362 homes in Mayo that have been identified as having issues with pyrite in the blocks should be put at the top of any redress list if funding becomes available, the July meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District was told this week. Sinn Féin councillor Teresa Whelan put forward that idea at Monday's meeting which was held in Geesala.

This time last year large swathes of the county were under water with flooding in the south Mayo area particularly bad, the issue once again raised its head at the December meeting of Mayo County Council this week. The elected members were given a presentation by senior executive engineer Dave Mellett in regard to how the council should make a submission to the OPW on the Draft Flood Risk Management Plan for the Moy and Kilalla Bay and Erriff, Clew Bay, Blacksod, Broadhaven.

Westport follows Foxford in being too costly for flood defence works

Following the news last week that Foxford had been deemed as being 'not cost beneficial' to have flood prevention works carried out on it as part of the Western Catchement Flood Risk Assessment and Manangment (CFRAM) scheme, Westport fell to a similar fate this week. And like the response from local representatives in Foxford last week, there was disappointment and bemusement from the elected members of the West Mayo District at this news.
