Four Mayo students have been awarded prestigious scholarships by Intel Ireland. Three of the students each received a Women in Technology scholarship and the fourth was a recipient of a Paul Whelan Memorial Scholarship.

Mayo knew before throw in that they still have plenty of work to do if they are going to stop Dublin’s drive for five All Ireland titles later on in the Summer, but if they were in any doubts they were given another warning of what they will have to do in a few months time to catch the Dubs.

Four Mayo sides will be battling it out for a spot in the last eight of the Connacht Junior Cup this weekend. The defending champions and Junior 1A league leaders Ballina will be facing into the game of the weekend when they host the Connemara All Blacks in Heffernan Park on Sunday at 2pm.

Mayo will have learned a lot from their league campaign this year, but the one lesson they will take away from Parnell Park on Saturday night is that if you don’t take the chances that come your way against a team like Cork, you’re not going to be going home with the silverware.

It was not the start to the National Football League that new Mayo manager Stephen Rochford would have hoped for last weekend, but Rochford was honest in his views on what went wrong last Sunday. Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser this week Rochford said: "Obviously the scoreline tells a story of being second best, having reviewed the video, you know the second quarter of the game, I would be very disappointed with because 15 or so minutes we were level and Cork went into a period where they couldn't miss and in that time we missed three or maybe four of what we'd call softer or easier chances, and if we had capitalised on those chances we could have really been within touching distance of four points at half time which would have left us in a more sprightly manner for the second half. But the way things materialise if you don't take your chances in this division, you're going to be punished and we met a Cork team that hit a lot of very sweet scores."
